The design features a containerized, swappable battery system integrated with electric propulsion and an electrical power system to coordinate the vessel’s power supply and energy consumption. ABS evaluated the concept’s approach to onboard battery installation safety, including interfaces to electrical and supporting systems, as well as preliminary safeguards addressing risks associated with thermal runaway and fire propagation.
“Battery-electric propulsion at this scale is a significant step forward for electrification. A swappable battery system also opens up new possibilities for how ships and ports work together, from charging to turnaround. ABS is proud to support Hanwha Power as it advances this design toward commercialization,” said Patrick Ryan, ABS Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer.
Jong-kyu Hwang, Hanwha Power Vice President, Technology Solutions, said, “This AIP from ABS marks an important step in extending Hanwha Power’s marine technology capabilities to fully electric vessels powered by large-scale battery systems. We will address the needs of the next-generation, zero-carbon maritime transport market with integrated solutions that combine electric propulsion and energy management technologies.”
