The ceremony was attended by key executives and employees, including Jong-min Song, Vice Chairman of Taihan; Dae-heon Kim, President and Chief Planning Officer of Hoban Group; and Min-sung Kim, Vice President of Hoban Group. The attendees wished for the safe operation of the Skandi Connector and the successful execution of future projects. They also toured the vessel’s key facilities and equipment to review its operational readiness and operating systems ahead of deployment.
Acquired by Taihan in May, the Skandi Connector is an 11,000-ton-class CLV for offshore wind projects and the largest vessel of its kind in Korea. It is equipped with high-specification systems capable of loading large volumes of submarine cables and supporting long-distance transportation, cable laying, and burial operations. Following its arrival in Korea and vessel delivery in July, Taihan has been preparing the vessel for deployment through inspections, equipment maintenance, and the establishment of its operating crew.
With these preparations in place, the Skandi Connector is scheduled to be deployed to the Yeonggwang Nakwol Offshore Wind Project in August to carry out burial operations for submarine cables that have already been laid. Using a trencher, a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) specifically designed for cable burial and deployed from the vessel, the submarine cables will be buried at a specified depth below the seabed. This will help prevent damage from external factors such as fishing gear and vessel anchors and ensure the cables remain securely protected.
Beginning with the Yeonggwang Nakwol project, Taihan plans to deploy the Skandi Connector to major submarine cable projects in Korea and overseas. Together with its existing CLV, PALOS, Taihan will establish a two-track installation system that enables the flexible deployment of each vessel according to project scale and installation requirements. Based on this system, the company plans to further strengthen its turnkey execution capabilities encompassing the entire process from submarine cable manufacturing and transportation to laying and burial.
