Green Electricity Illuminates Indoor Ski Resort in Central China

WUHAN, China–(BUSINESS WIRE)–“Power distribution equipment is operating steadily and the cooling load parameters are stable.” On August 15, maintenance personnel from the State Grid Hubei Electric Power Company came to the Wuhan Chengjian BONSKI with infrared thermometers to conduct electrical inspections. This leading indoor ice-and-snow complex in Central China maintains a constant temperature of -6°C year-round, supported by a reliable, round-the-clock power supply. It slashes carbon emissions using clean energy, balancing green low-carbon development with better efficiency and quality.

Nearly one million cubic meters in volume, the venue sustains a year-round standard snow layer 40cm thick; its refrigeration and snowmaking systems operate round the clock.

“Every 1°C rise in outdoor temperature causes a significant increase in cooling energy consumption, and we must go all out to ensure reliable supply when loads surge,” said Han Rui, Deputy Director of the Huancheng Power Supply Station under State Grid Hubei Electric Power Company. The utility uses smart terminals to monitor electricity usage data in real time, accurately assess load fluctuations, and carry out targeted maintenance. A 24-hour on-site duty team conducts inspections of lines and distribution equipment, ensuring uninterrupted power supply.

The venue’s rooftop is equipped with 45,800 square meters of photovoltaic panels. The solar project was assisted by the power supply company, achieving a peak daily generation of 25,000 kWh, with clean electricity directly feeding the cooling units.

The peak in photovoltaic power generation coincides with that in the venue’s cooling electricity demand; when sunlight is abundant at noon—which is precisely when cooling energy consumption is at its highest—energy efficiency is significantly improved. Under the guidance of the power supply company, the venue upgraded its smart control system to automatically regulate snowmaking intensity; added a 24-centimeter insulation layer to the walls to reduce heat loss and gain; and replaced all lighting fixtures with LED lamps, achieving energy savings of over 10%.

Data provided by the operator shows that self-generated and self-consumed solar power alone saves over 250,000 yuan in monthly electricity costs, with nearly 30% of the venue’s electricity needs met by clean energy.

Leveraging stable power supply and clean energy solutions, State Grid Hubei Electric Power Company has removed seasonal constraints on winter sports, showcasing a viable route for local cultural and tourism sectors to achieve green low-carbon transition.
