Baltica 2 is a 1.5 GW offshore wind farm jointly developed by PGE and Ørsted. Once operational, it will generate enough renewable electricity to power around 2.5 million Polish households, contributing significantly to Poland’s energy security and accelerating the country’s energy transition.
As the main contractor for the transport and installation of the Baltica 2 foundations and scour protection, Van Oord played a central role in delivering this critical phase of construction.
Before the work began, the Baltica 2 project team conducted a detailed analysis of different delivery options and potential scenarios that could affect the installation process. The preparations drew on Ørsted’s experience in delivering offshore wind projects across multiple markets, as well as the expertise of Van Oord, which is responsible for carrying out this stage of the work. This enabled the Baltica 2 project team to develop solutions designed to minimize key risks related to factors including the installation sequence, the availability of components and installation vessels, logistics, and the coordination of offshore activities. This collaborative approach enabled the safe and timely installation of all 111 foundations.
The Baltica 2 monopiles are up to 100 meters long, between 9.5 and 10.5 meters in diameter, and weigh approximately 1,900 tonnes each. Their installation required close coordination across the entire supply chain, from manufacturing and transport to offshore logistics, specialist vessel operations, and weather planning.
A key factor in the success of the project was the deployment of Van Oord’s specialist offshore installation vessels Svanen and Aeolus. By combining the capabilities of both vessels with extensive offshore wind expertise, Van Oord maximized installation efficiency and maintained a consistent pace of execution throughout the campaign.
The dual-vessel approach enabled multiple activities to be performed in parallel, supporting efficient offshore operations and helping to keep the project on schedule.
Maurits den Broeder, Managing Director Offshore Energy at Van Oord, said: “Completing the monopile installation campaign for Baltica 2 safely and on schedule is an important milestone for the project and for Poland’s offshore wind ambitions. We are proud to have contributed our offshore wind expertise, specialist vessels and experienced project teams to this complex operation. Close collaboration with Ørsted was key to maintaining momentum and delivering this phase successfully.”
The successful completion of the foundation installation campaign at Baltica 2 further reinforces Van Oord’s growing role in Poland’s emerging offshore wind sector. Building on its involvement in the Baltic Power offshore wind farm, the company’s first offshore wind project in Poland, Van Oord is establishing a strong track record in one of Europe’s most promising offshore wind markets.
As offshore wind deployment accelerates in the Baltic Sea, projects such as Baltic Power and Baltica 2 demonstrate Van Oord’s long-term commitment to Poland and its ambition to support the country’s energy transition through the delivery of complex offshore energy infrastructure.
