GOMO provides the US with over one million physical and biogeochemical observations per day, collected from a variety of observing instruments from the sea floor to the atmosphere. The resulting data—including real-time in situ observations, quality-controlled delayed-mode sensor data, laboratory measurements from collected samples, and derived data products – are crucial to supporting weather forecasts, climate models, ocean change analyses, and related decision-support tools. To maximize the impact of these data, GOMO is committed to supporting effective data management and data stewardship.
GOMO’s new Data Strategy will focus and guide our data efforts in the coming years toward the following overarching goals:
1. Support reliability of GOMO data streams
2. Enhance FAIR compliance of all GOMO-supported data and metadata
3. Improve integrated accessibility of GOMO-supported data.
4. Strengthen GOMO workforce data capabilities and expertise.

The GOMO Data Strategy will be followed by annual action plans that identify the priority actions, milestones and target deadlines toward implementation of the Data Strategy each year. The action plans and priority actions will be developed and undertaken with the oversight and contribution of the GOMO Data Strategy Workgroup – a group composed of roughly 20 subject matter experts, primarily principal investigators and data managers for GOMO-funded projects.
Current and future data efforts will be displayed on GOMO’s Data Strategy webpage.
