As digitalization continues to reshape the maritime industry, the first commercial autonomous vessels are due to launch in the next several years. To help build a safety culture around these new technologies, DNV GL has released a new class guideline covering autonomous and remotely operated ships.

Brazil's state-owned oil company, Petrobras, one of the world's fastest-growing energy companies, has signed a contract with Stena Bulk for the chartering of its MR product tankers Stena Conqueror (47,000 dwt, built in 2003) and Stena Conquest (47,000 dwt, built in 2004).

Wärtsilä announces an official partnership with theDOCK Innovation Hub, an Israel-based maritime-focused startup accelerator, in a move it hopes will see the Technology giant connecting with the hottest local talent and emerging technologies within the marine sector. TheDOCK brings together maritime stalwarts and aspiring creative startups to deliver practical innovations for port, shipping and logistics operations.

Three high-tech vessels, all serving very different segments, have been selected as the nominees for this year’s coveted Ship of The Year title. Aker Biomarine’s krill harvesting ship Antarctic Endurance, The Fjords all electric passenger vessel Future of The Fjords, and PONANT’s expedition cruise ship Le Lapérouse complete the shortlist for the prestigious accolade, to be handed out at SMM in Hamburg on 4 September.
