The Department of the Interior has announced the proposal of an offshore wind lease sale in the Central Atlantic. The announcement is part of the Administration’s latest actions to expand offshore wind opportunities, building on investments made by the President’s Investing in America agenda and creating good-paying jobs for American workers.

DNV, an independent energy expert and assurance provider, has announced the appointment of Jamie Burrows as head of its Energy Systems business area’s Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) unit. Amidst COP28 proceedings, the move underscores DNV's commitment to CCUS as a pivotal tool for decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors, such as heavy industry – including iron, steel, and cement production.

Global OTEC and 2H Offshore have signed an agreement to combine their expertise in Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) technology and marine engineering. The partnership, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in London last week, will focus on the development of floating OTEC, with emphasis on Water Intake Riser (WIR) systems that are essential for the technology to operate offshore.

SEASTAR – Sustainable European Advanced Subsea Tidal Array – marks a significant advancement in tidal energy; it will showcase industrial scale manufacturing, operation, and maintenance techniques for the first time. The project will do this throughout the entire lifecycle of the tidal farm; from design, production, shipping, deployment, and operation to decommissioning.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced commercial tenders for tidal stream as part of the ‘PPE’ — the French energy strategy update — after saying ‘we have to be at the top of our game in tidal stream’.

DEME and Greek renewable energy developer and independent power producer FARIA Renewables have signed a cooperation agreement to explore opportunities and co-develop offshore wind farms in Greece. Recognising the unique potential for growth in the offshore wind industry in the Mediterranean Sea and the evolving market, both companies aim to play a significant role in the region.

DNV, an independent energy expert and assurance provider, has taken a significant step forward in reshaping the offshore wind industry with the launch of a new Joint Industry Project (JIP) called Concrete FLOW which will optimize requirements for concrete floaters (floating or semisubmersible structures, generally moored to the seabed, used as foundations upon which equipment can be mounted), specifically tailored for floating offshore wind farms.

During the ‘Renewable energy: Innovate or accelerate?’ conference session during the Offshore Energy Exhibition & Conference 2023 (OEEC 2023), the speakers warned about focusing too much on innovation, noting that it could slow down the build-out (of offshore wind) – but also made the case for innovation in helping the industry accelerate on the path towards reaching the targets for 2030 and beyond.
