Since Starlink announced its connectivity services for the maritime industry, customers have shown big interest in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite communications at sea, because of the system’s ability to provide high-speed Internet at very low latency.

Ocean services provider DeepOcean and Akvaplan-niva have signed an agreement to cooperate regarding the potential utilization of remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and unmanned glider vehicles (USVs) to perform environmental studies for offshore wind and oil and gas developments.

TDI-Brooks successfully installed the Starlink Maritime platform on two of their four research vessels RV Brooks McCall and RV Miss Emma McCall. Both vessels are currently working on the US East Coast performing G&G surveys for offshore wind programs.

Offshore wind has historically been dependent on government subsidies, and this is still the case for the vast majority of projects, although support levels have generally declined over the past 10 years as project economics have improved due to economies of scale.
