In a first-of-its-kind deployment under Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funds, NOAA has awarded approximately $20.5 million for the coordinated management of ocean and coastal resources around the country. The recommended federal funds will significantly enhance existing collaboration between states, tribal governments and the federal government, and provide needed capacity to advance their work.

Texas A&M University at Galveston, the Texas A&M Maritime Academy, TOTE Services, LLC and Philly Shipyard, Inc. celebrated the cutting of steel for the fourth National Security Multi-Mission Vessel (NSMV) on January 18, destined for the Texas A&M Maritime Academy in Galveston, Texas in 2025.

Helix Robotics Solutions, the Robotics division of Helix Energy Solutions Group, Inc. has entered into a three-year charter agreement with two years of options for the DP2 offshore support vessel Glomar Wave for work on a range of opportunities in both the offshore Renewables and Oil & Gas sectors.

The two largest software companies in ocean robotics, Greensea Systems, Inc. creator of the open architecture platform OPENSEA®, and SeeByte, with their mission-level autonomy system Neptune and embedded Automatic Target Recognition (ATR), have continued their collaboration to provide a comprehensive solution for ocean robotics operators, from vehicle platform to operation center.

DaNa L. Carlis, Ph.D., a research meteorologist and experienced scientific leader, has been named the director of NOAA’s National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL) in Norman, Oklahoma. He will join the world’s preeminent research institution for observing and understanding severe thunderstorms and extreme weather on January 29. He is the first African American to be named a lab director in NOAA’s Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research.
