Global Maritime Celebrates First Female Marine Warranty Surveyor on Their Middle East Team

As eyes across the world turned to Qatar to watch the events of the FIFA Football World Cup unfold, marine, offshore and engineering consultancy Global Maritime is shining a light on the importance of female representation throughout the industry as they celebrate one of the first female Marine Warranty Surveyors in the Middle East onboard their team.

As BIMCO and the International Chamber of Shipping reported in 2021, women make up just 1.2% of the global seafarer workforce. But Bethany Jennings and Global Maritime haven’t let this statistic hold them back.

GlobalMaritinmeBethany, originally from Fall River, Massachusetts, spent over fifteen years in the energy sector around the world before being based in Qatar. Believed to be one of the only women in her role in the Middle East, Bethany now acts on behalf of 3rd parties, providing independent reviews and approving operations. In Qatar alone, this has included working with businesses such as Zakher Marine International (ZMI), Milaha, and Premier Marine Services.

Since starting the Marine Warranty role, Global Maritime has worked closely with Bethany to support in her aspirations for career development and progression in the industry. Due to Bethany’s proactive approach many clients are now asking for her by name.

Reflecting on her role, Bethany said: “Working in Qatar has been an incredible step for my career, and I am extremely grateful to Global Maritime for all the ongoing support as we work together to develop this exciting, never-before trodden path. As a woman in a predominately male-dominated sector, I have been pleasantly surprised day after day by how cooperative and non-judgmental the teams I work with are and look forward to all that is still to come for me. In Qatar specifically, I have never felt so welcomed. I am not judged on my gender, rather respected for my knowledge and passion for this ever-growing sector.”

“Working with Global Maritime has allowed me to not just develop my skills in a sector I love but also travel the world whilst doing so. To anybody who is considering joining this industry, I cannot recommend it enough – from the life and career skills it has taught me to the countless incredible people I have met, I have felt so supported every step of the way.”

Prior to working in Qatar, Bethany was based in the Gulf of Mexico and Trinidad from 2013 to 2021, gaining experience in areas such as rig moves, marine assurance, and vessel surveys, with trips spanning from two days to up to twelve weeks depending on job requirements.

An accredited OVID inspector since 2012 and member of the Global Maritime team since 2013, Bethany cut her teeth some time before this when she joined the HMS Bounty tall ship youth program aged just fifteen before being invited back as crew. It was here she discovered that her passion could become a viable career path, leading to her enrolment in the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in 1998 before going onto receive her Unlimited Masters License aged just twenty-nine.

Jaimmie Jones, Global Maritime’s Middle East Business Development Director, has continually expressed his admiration in the Marine Warranty Surveyor stating: “From the first day I met Bethany, I was so impressed by her professionalism and perseverance to conquer any obstacle that stands in her way.”

“To now see her take on this hugely important role in the Middle East is incredible; in a relatively short period of time Bethany has come such a long way, showing not just her peers but the entire world that she won’t be held back by our industry’s gender imbalance.”
